Vayishlach: L’ ilui Nishmas Avraham Zev ben Yaakov – Dr. Abe Chames
Chofetz Chaim on Parshas Vayishlach
In Parshas Vayishlach, the passuk states, “Vayomer Esav yesh li rav… Vayomer Yaakov… yesh li kol- Esav said, ‘I have plenty’… But Yaakov said, ‘I have everything” (33:9-11). The Chofetz Chaim explains that close analysis of these two statements brings to light two radically different perspectives on Olam Hazeh. Although Esav’s statement initially appears thankful and innocent, “I have plenty,” however, implies: “I have a lot, it is not enough, and I want more.” Yaakov however said, “I have everything,” meaning: “I am not lacking in anything.” Yaakov was satisfied with what he had.
What underpinned these two reactions? Why was Esav dissatisfied while Yaakov was content?
Esav’s focus in life was to chase physical pursuits and attain instant pleasure. He believed that benefits of this world were an end within themselves. Therefore, he was never satisfied with what he had. As Chazal tell us, a person who has one hundred wants two hundred. Human nature can never derive satisfaction from the pleasures of this world. In contrast, Yaakov’s focus in life was to chase spiritual pursuits and attain everlasting pleasure. He understood that the physical matters of this world are temporary and tools to be utilized for attaining true wealth in the World to Come.
