Bereishis: L’ ilui Nishmas Avraham Zev ben Yaakov – Dr. Abe Chames
Chofetz Chaim on Parshas Bereishis
In Parshas Bereishis, the passuk states, “Veha’aretz hai’sah sohu vavohu… vayomer Elokim yehi ohr- When the earth was bewilderment and void… G-d said, ‘Let there be light” (1:2, 3). A small light can push away a great deal of darkness. When darkness filled the entire world, with Hashem’s word alone, light was instantly created and the darkness was pushed aside. The entire episode of the creation of light is coming to teach us that a person cannot give up hope even in the darkest times because at the end of the day Hashem will shine His light.
This section of Bereishis is often taught to young children in order that they acquire emunah and bitachon in Hashem at a young age. These traits are especially important because they will help us overcome all of the stumbling blocks in our lives. Faith and trust in Hashem will remind us to constantly look forward to the salvation of G-d because it will surely come, just like the light of Bereishis did, and push away the darkness.
